HORSE MALADY
EPIDEMIC IN INDIA. FORM OF INFLUENZA. [United Press Association—By CableCopyright.) Calcutta, Dec. 18. Australian and English racehorses engaged in the King-Emperor’s Cup. the Viceroy’s Cup and other classic events, and polo > ponies of leading teams in India taking part in the Indian championship and cavalry chargers are all infected by an epidemic of coughing which has broken nut in Calcutta. The interaction of their training is already causing considerable inconvenience and it is possible that Calcutta’s Christmas sportin" festival will be seriously hit. The Calcutta Light Horse parade has been cancelled and possibly the opening of the paperchase of the chib season may be delaved. Some horses have rot the malady in a bronchitis form and there is great disquiet among the racing stables. According to the well-known Sydney veterinary surgeon Mr. RoyStewart, the epidemic is probably a form of influenza which is likely to cause coughing, bronchitis, swollen lei's. and inflammation of the eyes. Several vears ago there was a somewhat similar epidemic among racehorses in Svdney. The ailment was known as pink-eve, which is a form of influenza, and many horses were affected.
