NEW FACE
SURGICAL SKILL.... LORRY OVER HEAD. Sydney, December 17. Harold Shirley, aged 38, was admitted to the Canterbury District Hospital a fortnight ago with his face crushed out of recognition and with little chance of recovery. To-day, his face was remade, and he is on the road to recovery. Shirley is a carrier of Fergusonavenue, Belmore. He received frightful injuries on December 6, when his lorry, carrying nearly a ton of goods passed over his face. When ambulance officers arrived, they found'Shirley’s forehead smashed, both jaw-bones and nose broken, his left eye out of its socket, his chin hanging over his throat, and his teeth knocked out. Shirley was given first aid treatment, and rushed to Canterbury Hospital, where he was admitted in .a very low state. In the operation which followed the doctor succeeded in re-setting the face in its natural position, and remaking the damaged nose. The injured eye, however, was removed. In a few weeks’ time, the only sign of the operation will probably be a scaron the chin “I think I’m better-looking; now than ever I was!” is his grinning commentary upon the work of the surgeon.
