FEEDING LINSEED TO CALVES
Linseed meal may be fed td calves in three different ways. It may bo mixed with skim milk when feeding, it may be fod dry with a little chuff after feeding with milk, or it may be boiled or steamed and tho resultant gruel fed with the skim milk. Any of these methods will give satisfactory results if care is taken to feed the young calves very small quantities to begin with, as otherwise there is a danger of affecting digestion. If fod dry the quantity should bo gradually increased to about half a cupful morning and evening. If boiled, about one to one and a half cupful will bo required, according to tho amount of water present. Ono successful rearer of calves prefers to feed a mixture of linseed meal, crushed oats and a little chaff after giving tho milk. The mixture cun bo put to a trough or boxes, and tho young calves soon learn to eat it. This method has tho advantages of preventing the calves sucking each other after they havo had their milk.
