SUMMER IS NEAR
WHAT CATTLE NEED. Where there are no trees in fields it is an advantage to insert a post here and there foi cattle to rub against: thov can rub their necks so much easier against detached posts than against gates and fences; besides, they are not so likely to damage and break the latter. Clean water is positively necessary to the health of cattle; and when water is dammed in consequence of a short supply, care should be taken to rail the pool round »o that they cannot get into it with their feet, leaving only sufficient space for them to get their heads through to drink comfortably. Often during hot weather cattle get into the drinking pool and trample it into a filthy puddle. Their excrement i» dropped in the pool, asd there is soon an extraordinary accumulation of dangerous bacteria all over the place. This fetil water is very injurious to cattle, and may easily lead to disease and death. Pools that are practically stagnant should bu paved or cemented and frequently cleaned out; but if pure water can be obtained within a reasonable distance it will pay farmers tc lead it regularly to the cattle and rail off those muddy, polluted pools altogether.
