GIRL GUIDES

ACTIVITIES AROUND HASTINGS HIGH LIGHTS IN THE YEAR’S WORK. RETIRING COMMISSIONER’S REPORT. At the annual general meeting of the Girl Guides’ Association there was a good attendance of committee members, Guiders and others interested in the movement. Miss FitzRoy presided. Mr V. A. Thomson, read the balance sheet for the financial year, ending August 31, 1930, showing that the local association was in a good position. Miss R. Hunter, district captain, spoke of the proposed visit, of Hawke’s Bay Guides to Wellington for the big rally to bo held at Newtown Park early in March 1931, to greet Sir Robert and Lady Badon-Powell on the occasion of their official visit to New Zealand. Mrs Denton Tanner, retiring district commissioner, presented her annual report, which read as follows: — This, the sixth year of Guiding in Hastings, has again been marked by steady progress, the chief point of interest being the advent of Miss loe, an English Guider now resident in Havelock North, who has done much to help on Guiding in Hawke’s Bay this year. Miss Loe has held fortnightly meetings of Guiders from Hastings and Napier, which have been if immense value, and have been much appreciated. She has also held a very successful training camp at Bissington for Guiders from Hawke’s Bay. Miss Loo’s help is especially wel come just now, as Mrs Denton Tanner found it necessary in June to rcisgn her position as district commissioner, and no one has as yet been appointed in her place. LOSSES TO THE MOVEMENT. There have been several changes amongst the Guiders. It was with great regret that Miss Turner Williams’ resignation as Hanger Captain was received. She had been connected with Guiding for some time and had never spared herself —especially with the Bangers. Her energy and. enthusiasm will be much missed. Miss Dalgleish has also found it necessary to give up tho Parkavlo Guido Company, owing to lack of time. She has. been a faithful worker for over four years, and will also bo much missed, During the year, the Rangers have dis banded, partly owing to want of a leader and partly owing to lack of interest on the part of the Rangers themselves. Miss McCullough has joined tho Central Co. as lieutenant in place of Miss Seckar and Miss Glenny who left to take over tho Parkvale Guides, ns captain and lieutenant respectively. They are working hard, and wo wish them every success. Miss Alex Rocht'ort, who passed her Tawny Owl test earlier in the year has taken over the Parkvalo Brownies, with Miss Nola Better ns Pack Leader. She has Sone splendidly, and has now a full pack and a waiting list. Miss McGuire has left to take up nursing in Wellington. Miss Tyers is carrying on the Mahora Guide Company alone. A special word of thanks is duo to Airs Tyers for carrying on the Hastings West Brownie Pack. Her help and interest in Guiding are much appreciated. Miss Greenwood has passed her lieutenant’s test and received her war rant, and Aliss Sophy Davidson early in tho year joined tho second Havelock Guide Uo. as acting-lieutenant. Miss Peggy Harvey had to give up her position as Pack Leader with the Havelock Brownie Pack and Miss Sybil Bush has now joined as acting Tawn Owl. The Richmond Challenge Cup for competition amongst the Guide Companies for tho best run company was won by the Second Havelock North Co. OUTSTANDING EVENTS. The chief items of interest during tho year have been: (1) An official welcome was given by Guides and Brownies to Aliss Buth Herrick in the King's Theatre on November 23rd, tho Guiders afterwards entertaining Aliss Herrick to tea at Roach’s. (2) Twenty Guides and nine Guiders attended the Dominion Guide Camp held in January at Trentham. (3 Combined Church Parades for Guides, Brownies and Scouts were held oil June 22nd in Hastings and Juue 29th in Havelock. (4) On Anzac Day Guides and Brownies attended services in Hastings and Havelock and laid wreaths on tho Cenotaphs. (5) In October the Guides attended tho Scout Jamboree talk given by Mr Cooksey in the Assembly Hall. There are now 54 Guides (last year 76), 46 Brownies (last year 51), 14 Guiders (last year 12). The assocint members remain about tho same in number (last year (111). On April L2th tho Hastings Association held a most successful shop in aid of their friends, the first appeal to tho public for throe years. It is with great regret that Mrs White’s resignation as district secretary has been received. Tho committee desires to express its gratitude for all she has done during her term of office. Airs Denton Tanner has been appointed to take her place. In conclusion the committee wishes tr. thank all those who have helped to make the work a success, particularly Air Angus for auditing the accounts and Mr V. A. Thomson who has acted as han. treasurer, thus materially lightening the work of the committee.
