N.Z. FORESTRY LEAGUE

ANNUAL CONFERENCE. Wellington, Juno 27. Some criticism of taxation matters was made by Mr James Deans, of Christchurch, president of the Now Zealand Forestry League, at tho opening of the annual conference to-night. They were pleased to note, said Mr Dean, that the forest service had again been able to carry out a very full programme of planting and had extended its operation in several new directions. “A deterrent to planting is the extra taxation that has been placed on the farming community dur ing the year,” continued the president. “This may not appear to affect many, but tho feeling of insecurity to which it gives rise will do much li? tm, because if super taxes arc to remain farmers, who have to pay them, will certainly curtail expenditure which will not bring in an immediate return. I think it is quite safe to say that the payers of. the super-tax are men whit would normally do a good deal of plapting on their properties.” After a brief reference to the work of the forest service, the speaker said it might be well if they could get more information as to how tho different phases of forestry were progressing, such as thinning and pruning. The regeneration of the kauri had been under observation for some years ns well ns its annual increment, and some information on the subject would be welcome at the present time.
