PETROL DRUM EXPLODES
MR ARTHUR H. WILSON INJURED. UNUSUAL HAPPENING. An unfortunate happening befel Mr Arthur H. Wilton, garage proprietor, of Karamu road, yesterday afternoon while endeavouring to open a 44-gallon petrol drum. Although the drum was empty, the vapour still remained, and when he knocked the screw cap off an opening with a spanner to loosen it, a spark jumped across to another hole. An explosion so violent that it blew out both end of the drum immediately occurred. The top end struck the side of Mr Wilson’s head and passed on. knocking a hole in the garage roof. It was extremely fortunate for him that his face was not closer to the top of the drum, or he would most certainly have lost his life. As it was, his injuries were at once seen to ho serious, and ho was conveyed to Napier Hospital. He was reported to he progressing favourably this morning.
