TO-DAY’S RACING

NAPIER PARK CLUB WINTER MEETING OPENS. GLORIOUS WEATHER. The Napier Park Racing Club’s steeplechase meeting opened at Greenmeadows to-uay in glorious weather. There was a large attendance of the public, and investments were more substantial in the opening events than has been the case for some time. The course was in perfect order and some excellent racing was witnessed. Although three falls were registered in the Petane Hack Steeplechase, none of the riders sustained injury. A. McDonald is having a successful outing, he having ridden the winners of the first two races, and was on the second horse in the third race. The officials of the club are to be congratulated on the excellent arrangements. The following are the results up to going to press PETANE HACK STEEPLES. Of 125 sovs. Two miles. 1 Mr. C. F. Vallance’s b g Corneroff, by Daniloff— Nieppe. syrs. (A. McDonald) 90 1 8 Mr. H. R. Peacock’s b g High Heather, aged (A. Jenkins), 90 2 3 Messrs Reedy Bros, b g Master Arch, aged (D. Pinsley), 9.0 3 (Winner trained by Mrs A. McDonald. Awapuni.) Also started: • 6 Hilcullus 9.12, 2 JVyeford 9.11, 4 Kovno 9.10, 7 Kowhatu 9.6, 5 Timipouri 9.6, From the rise of the tapes Wyeford shot out to the front. Going down the back he ran away from High Heathei who was leading from Hilcullus, Kovno and Timipouri. Across the top Wyeford had a lead of about eight lengths from High Heather, who was a similar distance in front of Corneroff, Master Arch and Hilcullus Entering the straight he had a long lead but at the stand double he failed to take the second jump, going right through it to tear the wing away and throw his rider. At the jump down the back both Timipouri and Kovno fell, and Hilcullus was interfered with. High Heather now had charge of the field from Corneroff who was well clear of Master Arch. Coming to the home bend High Heather, jumping badly, Ist Corneroff through. In the race down the straight the favourite only had to canter in to win bv about five lengths. Also started: 6 Shrewd 9.13, 4 Lin Arlington 9.10. 7 Masher 9.4, 4 Purseful 9.4, 6 Whakaue 9.3, 8 Kaokaoroa 9.0. Purseful was first to show out from Deluge. Lyn Dhu and High Society. The order was the same over the first hurdle, but passing the stand Shrewd fell. Going into the back streach Purseful still had charge from High Society, Deluge, and Masher. At the next jump Lin Arlington nearly lost his rider, but after that he improved his position considerably and at the four-furlongs post was running close up with the leaders. In the next furlong High Society took charge from Purseful and Deluge. Round in- the bend for home the favourite went to the front, leading from High Society. Lin Arlington and Purseful. He cleared the last fence well and went on to win by five lengths, Hiuh Society being half a length further back. Time, 2.44 2-5. Lin Arlington was fourth. MEEANEE HACK HANDICAP. 1 Miss B. Quinlivan) Also started: 10 Repay C.ll, 3 Evening Hero 9.11, 2 Keen 9.11, 6 King ilanu 9.4, 8 Arrowzone 9.3, 11 Crown Link 9.2, 7 Hystnde 9.0, 9 Wedding Bells 9.9. The field made an even break. Arrowzone showing out from Blue Paper, Winlock, Arrowhead and Evening Hero. Across the top the order was unchanged, except that Evening Hero was moving up on the outside. Coming to the home bend Blue Paper had charge from Winlock, Arrowzone. Keen and Evening Hero. Blue Paper led into the straight and about 200 yards from home Winlock came away to win in an exciting finish by a length and a half. Arrowhead was half a length away third. Time. 1.15 1-5. Arrowzone was fourth. NAPIER STEEPLECHASE, Of 200 sovs.; 2} miles. 4 Mr. W. L. Thomson’s b g Flying Swift, by Swift Flight— Flying Shadow, 6yrs. (A. McGregor). 9.10 .... 1 6 Mr. S G Davidson’s br g Nukumai, aged (A Skipper), 11.1 2 5 Mr G R. Brown’s br g Red Bank, aged (J Mcßae), 9.11 3 Also started: 1 Ponjoya 11.9, 2 Handy 9.12. 3 Birkbeck 9.8. After the field settled down Handy was first to show out from Birkbeck, Red Bank and Nukumai The leading three took the first fence together Passing the stand Red Bank had a good lead from Handy. Birkhock and Nukumai. with Ponjola I” -In. had

a lead of six lengths from Handy, who was a similar distance in front of Birkbeck and Nukumai. Across the top to the home bend Red Bank was still leading from Birkbeck and Handy, who were running together. Down the straight the field closed up, with Ponjola still bringing up the rear Going down the hack Flying Swift ran up into second place. A bad jump by the leader enabled Flying Swift to take charge of the field, and going across the top he had a good lead from Birkbeck and Nukumai. Rapidly running away from the field Flying Swift had only to jump the last fence to win, which he did in easy fashion by 20 20 lengths. Time, 4.57 2-5. Birkbeck was fourth, then came Ponjola and Handy. AHURIRI HURDLES HANDICAP. Of 150 sovs.; 1J mile. 1 Mr J. Bull’s b g Brigadier Bill, by AU Red—Te Hoie, aged A. Jarvis). 10.5 1 4 Mr C. E. Air Force was first to show out from Kalakaua, Wharnclitfe and Brigadier Bill The position remained unchanged round the back and into the straight, where Brigadier Bill moved into second position, Wharncliffe being well back. Going into the back Air Force, Brigadiei Bill and Kalakaua were well bunched, but after the next jump Kalakaua found tne pace too fast, and across the top he fell back. Air Force and Brigadier Bill were now together, but at the next jump the former fell, leaving the favourite well clear, and he had only to canter home to win by six lengths, with Wharnclitfe four lengths further back.
