DISTRICT NEWS OF THE DAY

A BRILLIANT FUNCTION ANNUAL JOCKEY CLUB BALL. LAST NIGHT’S DANCE AT WAIPUKURAU. Recognised as the premier function of the year and the outstanding social event in the district, tho Waipukurau Jockey Club's annual ball, which was heid at the Municipal Theatre, Waipukurau, last night, proved in all ways a brilliant success. The club’s lavish hospitality and wonderful entertainment was the subject of hearty congratulations from all sides. A beautiful and scintillating scene was presented in the ball room when the dancers took the floor, the many pretty and fashionable dresses and wraps of the ladies striking a note of gaiety, which was offset by the more sombre attire of the men. The decorations reflected great credit on those responsible. The ballroom was greatly enhanced with long lines of maidenhair fern radiating from the four corners to a gigantic lampshade suspended from the ceiling, decorated with long multi-coloured streamers representing the racing colours of the various owners. Greenery and palms arranged about the foyer toned with the well carried out scheme. The orchestral dais was decorated in a like manner. Converted into a cosy drawing room with roomy settee? and comfy chairs, tho stage proved very popular with non-dancers and those who desired to sit out. In the supper room tho tables of dainties were decorated with bowls of fresh flowers and streamers.

Mrs. H. R. Peacock, and Mrs. J. Blundell wene responsible for the decorations, and were the recipients of congratulations from all sides on their handiwork. The committee which ensured the success of the evening was: Mesdames J. D. Ormond, L. E. Whelch, C. Raymond. L. Percy Hunter. J. O’Reilly, J. Winlove, J. I>. Todd. H. R. Mesdames Whelch and Raymond, and Messrs. W. J. Nightingale and J. 11. Hindman, deserve commendation fol the wonderful manner in which they arranged the ball and catered for the large crowd. Enjoyable and enticing music was supplied bv Mr. Wi Duncan’s orchestra. and during the supper adjournment extras were played bv Mrs. J. O'Rcillv. Miss M. McLeod! and Mi. Don Raine. Messrs. C. J. O’Reilly and Geoff Speedv capably carried out the duties of M.’sC.

WAIPAWA

(Own Correspondent). A motor car driven by Miss Smith, of Waipawa, was badly damaged in a collision with an unknown motorist on Wednesday evening. It appears that Miss Smith was coming towards town from the railway station when a car proceeding north collided with her car, tearing off both wheel caps, badly damaging the mudguards, and doing serious damage to tho transmission. The motorist did not stop to ascertain the damage wrought. Tho Borough Council will hold its monthlv meeting to-night, when a fairly lengthy agenda will be attended to. Mrs. Spicer has been compelled to return to the Waipawa District Hospital for further treatment. The alterations to the kitchens and dressing rooms of the Municipal Theatre are progressing speedily. When completed they will make it much more convenient for the ladies in charge of the catering arrangements at functions where refreshment are required.
