Lieut. A. Aitken, 0. Coy., Ist (0) Battalion Hawke’s Bay Regiment, has passed his examination for the rank of captain.

Mr M. M. McDonald, late foreman of the Tomoana Freezing Works, has been appointed manager of the Wellington municipal abattoirs. He has already taken up his duties, and on Tuesday was introduced to the members of the Abattoirs Committee. Mr McDonald is a native or Scotland nnd has had considerable experience of the meat business in Australia and New Zealand.

Sir Frederick Toone, who died on Tuesday, was secretary to the Yorkshire County Cricket Club and manager of the last three English teams which visited Australia. A knighthood was given him last year on his return from Australia with the team captained by Mr. Chapman that won back the Ashes. The honour was regarded as a w'ell-deserved recognition of his services to cricket.—Press Association.

On Tuesday evening the staff of tho Hastings branch of the Bank of New South Wales met to bid farewell to their manager. Mr. F. J. Hull, who is retiring on superannuation after 47 vears of service witlr'the bank. Mr. Clark on behalf of ihe staff presented Mr. Hull with a smoker’s stand nnd Mrs. Hull with a small present in crystal, at the same time wishing them both every happiness nnd the best of health for many years to come. Mr. J. Malfrov, of the Stratford branch, hss been apnointed to succeed Mr. Hull.
