AUTUMN RACING

NAPIER PARK MEETING PRESIDENTS CUP TO TOURIST. ROYAL DUKE AGAIN. The Napier Park Racing Club’s autumn meeting was concluded on Saturday at Greenmeadows, when some excellent racing was witnessed. At the conclusion of the President’s Handicap, the president (Mr. C. E. Twist), the donor of the cup, presented tiie trophy to the owner of the winning horse (Tourist), Mr. J. McLaughlin, who had purchased the horse only the day before. Mr. Twist said it gave him great pleasure to present the cup to a sportsman who had come a long way to win. Mr. McLaughlin, too. had formerly trained horses on the Napier Park course, from which he had sent out a of winners. Mr. Twist also expressed the liope that the increased popularity that tho club was experiencing would be permanent. With increasing support it was hoped to be able to make needed improvements, which had been postponed on account of finances. He was proud of the honour of being president of the club, and was glad to be able to mark his long oonnection with the club by presenting a cup for the principal hack event. His first introduction to racing in Hawke’s Hay was with a horse called Waterford, which lie owned and with which he won three races in one day at Woodthorjje. Hector Gray again rode two winners, milking a total of four for the meeting. Royal Duke was the only double winner at the meeting. The totalisator showed a ' slight, decrease for the meeting, the total for the day being £16,111. compared with £17,094 for the second day last year. The total for the two days was £28,473, a decrease of £948 on tho meeting held in 1929. The following are the results of races decided after we went to press on Saturday;—

Also started: 1 Pahu 8.5, 5 Rich liarrest 8.2. 4 High Society 8.2, 3 Merry Melody 7.0. Cloyne was first out, being followed by Pnhu Merry Melody, and Royal Opera, High Society being loft at tho post. Across the top Cloyne was two lengths clear, with the order tinehnnged. Going round tho homo bond the field began to close up. with Cloyne lending into the straightRoyal Opera and Tourist both challenged, and in the race for the post the greatest finish of the day was witnessed, the first four finishing almost, together. Merry Melody was fourth. Time, 1.26 3-5.

HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP Of 150 sore. Once round.

Also started: 5 Tiega 8.11, 3 Crown Link 8.0. Crown Link was first away from Rory Mor, Huikai and Pale Star. Going across the top the leader was joined by the favourite, who took charge when the run for home was entered, and eventually won by a length; Pale Star was a close third, being only a nose behind. Tiega was fourth. Time, 1 53.

TRIAL HANDICAP Of 100 sovs. Six furlongs.

The field was given a good despatch, from which the favourite showed out early from Falcon, Kimbo. AVedding Bells, Hand Over, and Physco. Coming to the home bond there was very little change in the order. Once into tho straight Kimbo ran into second place, but Don Quixote was never seriously challenged and won comfortably bv two lengths, six lengths between second and third. Hand Over was fourth. Although a small field an excellent race was witnessed. Kaihoro gained an early advantage from Aston, Bonogne. Co tide and R oyal Duke. At the half-mile post the top-weight was still clear of Aston, with the favourite lying next. Kaihoro was

still making the pace when rounding the home bend, with Aston and Royal Duke lying handy. Down the straight the field closed and positions quickly changed. Over the last fifty yards Royal Duke and Bonogne both made a. great run. the former heading

off Kaihoro by a bare margin, while Bonogne finished a close third. Time, 1.13 1-5.
