WAITANGI BRIDGE
PRELIMINARY WORK STARTS 800 N. COUNTY COUNCIL’S DECISION. The Hawke’s Bay County Council to-day was advised bv the Hawk*’, Bay Rivers Board that it had affirmed the principle that the two new traffic bridges at the Waitangi should not be shorter than either of the railwav bridges. Mr. B. B Logan (chairman) stated that since the board had adopted that policy the council was now in, a position to have matters finalised in connection with its bridges. Cr. T Mason Chambers agreed that the traffic bridge at the Waitangi should be as long as the railway bridge, but he failed to see the need of such a big bridge at the Washout. In his opinion the position could be met by a low embankment or a high embankment with a short bridge, which could adequately deal with any overflow that might occur. * Members thought it a pity that there could not be a combined railway and traffic bridge. The council then agreed to get in touch immediately with the Highways Board in connection with the preliminary work for a new bridge at the Waitangi.
