FIELD DAY AT WAIPAWA,

With the object of stimulating th* interest in commercial beekeeping already aroused in the Waipawa and Waipukurau districts, members of the local Association journeyed on Saturday last to the apiary of* Mrs J» Milburn. Waipawa. where a numbef of southern apiarists wer* present and spent a most instructive and enjoyable day. Addresses were given by the. presi* dent of the local Association, Mi% Ashcroft, and Mr. Shepherd, the former covering the advantage! of bee-keeping as a hobby for both young and old of both sexei, and mentioning the phenomenal increase in honey export during recent years, and the high position which our product has secured on the world i markets. Mr. Shepherd dealt with' the difference in hanits and efficiency of Black and Italian boos, stressing the advantages of the latter. It was also suggested that an effort l>e made to increase the extent and quality of the honey and bee-product exhibits at the forthcoming Hawke’| Bay Show, with the object af arousing more widespread and active interest in the industry Mr. L Riesterer, Government Apiary Instructor, gave several in» teresting demonstrations of handling bees and answered a large number of questions from interested He dealt also with the design of s modern honey-house, and detailed the work of extraction.

Other interesting demonstration® and addresses dealt with apiary appliances, transft?rring bees from a box hive to a standard hive, observation hives, anti nectar making Afternoon tea, supplied by Mra Milburn, was much appreciated, and a pleasant afternoon concluded with votes of thanks to Mrs Milburn and her son for their hospitality, and the use of their apiary. It was decided, if sufficient support offered, to hold

a series of winter and spring lectures at Waipawa, and if possible to form a branch of the Association in that locality
