“DIANE DEVELOPS.’’

Catchy music, excellent chorus work, a stage which continually presents a bright and frequently vaiying spectacle, ami the whole-hearted enthusiam of the members of the Waipiikurau Operatic Society, ensure the success of “Diane Develops. ’’ the musical comedy to be presented at the Municipal Theatre on Wednesday and Thursday next. The large number of performers are particularly well east. Miss Phyllis Clark makes a delightful Diane, Miss Isabel Cairns, a dainty and vivacious figure, in the role of Krushia. Mrs Nita Mcßae a popular favourite will bo seen in a worthy part. Mt Jack Boyce, remembered for his successful roles makes a departure in his work as “Michel,” a bell boy in disguise. Mr Athol Allan,: of Gisborne, is the possessor of. a fine voice, has some fine solos as his share. Messrs Chatwin and Ponder will create no end' of amusement as the Counts Bunato and Fforbaifor. Mr Jack Cook as “Alphonse Lui’d Avignon,” ably interpretes the unhappy Frenchman, always running away from his wife and Mr Barnard Atkins excels himself as “Chancellor of Knutvia.” Mr Gordon Gay portrays “General Kutteruff” as to the manner born. The orchestra under the baton of Mr Malkin will add to the success of “Diane Develops,” The box plan opened at Woods’ Music Depot to-day.

GYMKHANA ON WEDNESDAY,

The Battery Commander, Captain J. J. Kean, has consented to the sth Battery, N.Z. Artillery, giving a.firing exhibition at the gymkhana to be held on Russell Park on Wednesday; The public would be well advised to be on the ground in time to see this novel attraction. An exhibition of: jumping is to’ be 'given by Vernier, the hurdle champion of which Mr A. W. Parsons ■is the owner, and this attraction should make a wide appeal. For the occasion a maiden jumping competition has been arranged, the event being open to horses that have not won a niqiden event at an A. ’and P. Show nor an open one at a sports gathering. The . varied sports programme—athletic, cycle and horse events will be preceded by a procession including decorated cars, qtc., for prizes. Mrs M. M. A’Deane will be tlio judge. The Town Band is to render a number of selections, and in tjiis as well as other directions ample enjoyment is being assured for patrons. Entries for the athletic and cycling features close to-night at 8 o’clock with Mr F. A. G. Dunn (honorary secretary). The horse events arc post entry.

The patients in the Pukeora Bimatoraim wore entertained by a concert party from Dannevirke, headed by Mrs Mercer, on Thursday night, 'diss Quigley’s orchestra provided an excellent programme, while a warmly appreciated item was a dance by I'ttlo Miss Tatere. Miss Aiken sub-matron, presided over an appetising simper tendered to the visitors.

A social reunion, marking the dose of a year’s activity, was held last evening by the local troop of Boy Scouts and proved a very enjoyable function.

In addition to being fare-welled by the members of the Orchestral Society, Mr Erie. Reckin was the guest of honour at an validiatory gathering held on the local bowling green, when, on behalf of the members of the club, the treasurer, Mr Gavin Black, in the unavoidable absence of the president, Mr W. 1,. Williams, presented the departing player on the eve of leaving for England and the Continent, with a case of pipes. Mr Black referred to the high esteem in which Mr Roekin

was held, and wished him happiness and prosperity in the future. Mr Beckin will be greatly missed amongst bowlers as he is one of the foremost players in Waipukurau, being runner-up for the singles championship, and is at present one of the pairs champions. Dr. W. E. Redman, Deputy Grandmaster of the New Zealand Masonic Order, who has been visiting Central Hawke’s Bay returned to Blenheim on Thursday. He attended a large gathering held, under the auspices of Bedford Lodge (Waipukurau) on Wed nesday night. Sister Davey, of the Waipukurau Hospital staff, is at present on holiday leave. Staff-nurse Charteris, of the Wai■pukurau Hosptal, who has just completed a four years’ course of training, has resigned-from her position.
