DEATH OF FINANCIER

HELPER OF JABEZ BALFOUR. KINDNESS OF TILDEN-SMITH. London, December 24. When Jabez Balfour was released from prison, an unnamed city magnate, as related in Bramwell Booth's reminiscences, twice made efforts to give him a fresh start. He first gave him a chance to make good in the Far East, but city influences caused the attempt to rail. Then he gave him a position in Wales. Balfour entrained at London, full ol hope, but died on the way. Commissioner David Lamb, of the Salvation Army, in a letter, reveals that the unnamed city magnate was Mr Richard Tilden-Smith, who dropped dead in the House of Commons on Wednesday. Mr Tilden-Smith, before his death, devised a coal scheme, based on a complete reorganisation of the industry, and improved methods of production, by which be believed wages could be increased and the price reduced. The plan is now in the Government’s possession.
