(Special Representative.) The cricket fixtures for Central Hawke's Bay were not re.nued on Saturday owing to the abse, ee of so many players from the district on holiday bent. On Saturday next the senior and junior rounds will be in progress once more. The borough footpath concreting staff has completed the paving of the western side of the Hunter Park end of Nelson street and to-day proceeds with the levelling of the opposite pathway. This up-to-date scheme of causeways now extends throughout many streets and serves most of the arterial routes of pedestrian traffic. Windy weather marked the greater part of the week-end and the conditions tended to restrict the movements of the public, but few people being abroad. The countryside has suffered a set-back in the matter of the growth of grass, while the dryness is an unwelcome change from the greenness in evidence prior to the ’Xmas holiday period. Light showers of rain fell last evening. With the resumption of the weekly stock sale to-morrow Waipnkuran will have resumed the even tenor of its way and it is hoped that business will brighten up again following upon the period of relaxation inseparable from the ’Xmas trade bustle. The shops were of necessity closed at 5.30 p.m. on Saturday, two late nights not being permissible in terms of the Shops and Offices Act during any week. Mr. A. 0. Pike, postal supervisor, left to-day for Paeltakariki (Horowhenua) on the first stage of his holiday of three weeks’ duration Mrs Pike and family are already holiday-making at the seaside resort mentioned. Subsequently Mr. Pike proceeds to the South Island. , It is pleasing to report,that Mr. E. A. Goodger. who is undergoing a period of three months’ rest, is showing signs of already gained benefit from the few weeks’ quietude he has experienced. The Rev. P. Houghton. M.A., ol Brooklyn (Wellington), who is ex changing pulpits with Canon E. D Rice, conducted the services in St Mary’s (Anglican) Church, Waipukuran, yesterday. The service in St. Andrew's (Presbyterian) Church, also at Wanstead. yesterday were conducted by Mr H. Gould (Clive), the Rev. A. C. McLean being on holiday leave. Mr. B. Gray, whb has been under treatment in the Waipnkurau Public Hospital for the past fortnight, suffering seriously from pneumonia, is now progressing very favourably. Edith West, aged 14 years, the victim of a serious shooting mishap at Kopua on New Year's Day—a bullet entering the right leg—is making satisfactory progress towards recovery. She is a patient in the Waipuku ran Hospital. Mr and Mrs E. H. Leigh left during the week-end on a motor tour of the Auckland.
