WOOL

NAPIER’S SECOND SALE MANY PASSINGS RECORDED. COMPETITION NOT KEEN, Ths second wool tale of the 1929-30 season wee held at the Municipal Theatre, Napier, this mornlug, when the brokers offered a catalogue of 21,989 bales to about 65 buyers, representative of all manufacturing countries and local mills and wool scourers. With the offering of the first catalogue it was apparent that the buyers were not prepared to do business at the reserves placed on the majority oi the clips, especially where the wool was fine. Later the bidding improved slightly, especially when coarser wools and piece wools were offered, the latter being well competed for by local mills. Bradford bought a con siderable quantity, the Continent being less active than at last sale, as was also the representative of the Australian mills who bought heavily in Napier last month. Probably more than a third of the total offerin' failed to sell under the hammer. Sales took place at the following figures:— Hogget Wqol: Fine lid to 13)d, medium 10d to lljd, coarse 9d to lOd.

Crossbred Fino 10d to lljd, medium lOd to 12|d (exceptional medium lines 13jd to 14jd), coarse 9jd to lid (exceptional coarse lines 13d to 14d).

Halfbred: lljd to 13d. Southdown: lljd to 12Jd. Lambs: Firsts 12Jd to I3’d, seconds to 9Jd First Pieces; 9d to 12d. Second Pieces: 6d to Sid. Bellies: 6}d to Bd. Necks: BJd to JOjd. Dead Wool: 7Jd to lOd. Cotted Wool: To 9Jd. Crutchings: Sd to 9jd. Locks: od.

COMPETITION SELDOM KEEN. Competition was seldom keen, and although occasionally an especially attractive lot would bring a price equal to the best of last sale, the average was down bv at least a penny to a penny-halfpenny per pound for all sorts. Coarser wools appeared to be in keenest demand. Lambs' wool was not wanted, prices for the best being only slightly over 12d per lb., while second lambs’ wool fetched about the same price as pieces. Some of the best prices received were as follow:—E.M. (B wool) 13fd • ERG. under anchor (C. wool) I3d; P.P.P. conjoined (B. c-e) 13Jd, (C. ewe) 14d, (Ist lambs) 13}d; WValley (Ist lambs) 13? d; J.G. over W (Ist lambs) 13|d: W in diamond (B. wether) 13d; D-M.G. (A. wether) 13; Motere (hogget A.A.) 15}d.

BROKERS’ REPORTS. WILLIAMS AND KETTLE, LTD. Our offering was 4,465 bales. The condition of the wool was not so good as that offered in November, in that it was not so well grown. There were fewer buyers than earlier in the season, and the competition was very ragged, whilst there was very little spirit in the bidding. The greatest animation was shown when our interlotted lines and “pooled” wools were offered. We estimate that values for all classes of fleece wool were fronj a Jd to jd down on the recent Wellington sale, and in one or two cases for extra fine wool the drop was quite a Id. Pieces, bellies and crutchings did not show such a drop as the fleece wool, producing good competition from the Continent. There was very poor competition for the ten lots of lambs’ wool we had to offer, and most of these were passed in. We sold about 65 per cent, under the hammer The following are some of our principal sales:—Hauanu :' BH 12Jd, CH IOJd, DH 10|d, B 10jd, Ist pcs. 9Jd.
