THE LATE BISHOP CLEARY

FUNERAL TO-MORROW. Auckland, Dec. 10. The body of Bishop Cleary was taken to St. Patrick’s Cathedral this afternoon for lying in state until the funeral on Thursday morning. Prayers for the dead were recited m the Cathedral to-night, the attendance being overflowing. Father T. O'Connor, of Wellington, who was a pupil of Bishop Cleary’s at St. Peter’s College, Wexford, Ireland, preached a short sermon. The Governor-General has telegraphed to Bishop Liston: “Her Excellency and I are deeply grieved to hear of the death of Bishop Cleary, and send you our most sincere sym pathy in the loss of one who will bt greatly missed, and for whom we had great regard.” A message from the Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward, reads: “I have received with deep regret your telegram announcing the death of Bishop Cleary, and 1 hasten to express to vou and the members of the Catholic Church in the Auckland Diocese my sincere sympathy in the loss of its distiguished head. The late Bishop Cleary possessed a lovable personality which endeared him to a very large circle of friends both in and out of the church. I am very sorry that my present indisposition will prevent me being able personally to attend the last rites.”

CHILDREN IN PRAYER. (Per Press Association.! Auckland, Dec. 11. Three thousand children knell in prayer for repose for the soul of Bishop Cleary, who in life had made them his special care. When the pontificiai mass of the Requiem was sung at St. Patrick’s Cathedral today children of schools and orphanages came lioin all parts of the city and suburbs. Bishop White, of Dunedin, preached a sermon appropriate to children, urging them to take the late Bishop’s example as a guide for their lives.
