UNIQUE HUNTING TROPHY

A MOOSE'S HEAD. Patrons of a well-known men's mercery establishment in Heretaunga street, Hastings, as well as all passers-by, are keenly interested in i magnificent trophy exhibited in the windows. This is indeed the most unique sporting trophy ever shown in New Zealand as it is the head of the first moose shot in tho Dominion. It was secured by Mr. E. J. Herrick, of Hastings. It is a splendid trophy. The great widespread of the antlers, though these are not developed as fully as they might bo, as in its original habitat, declare the beast to tie fully grown. There is to be seen the little lappet of skin, regarding which no scientist can even form a theory as to its use—a lappet of fur hanging down from just above the brisket. The grand head, the wide sweep of shoulder, and the fine appearance of the whole trophy makes it one of the most magnificent spoils of the chase in New Zealand that one could wish to see. The beast in his native wilds must be a grand sight, with his towering form of six feet high at the withers, the great head, and the wide spending antlers, a beast that only n .393 rifle bullet will stop Exhibited us it is in the shop of Messrs T Pickett and Co., it is attracting great attention A curious commentary re garding it is that this magnificent head is set on view among a fine exhibition of shirts, collars, ties, etc ■ill set out for the Christmas trade and the comparison between the two is one that between men's fashions and the trophy of the chase is well worth seeing. Only one thing can be said of each—that each is excellent i of its kind.
