The cricket match for the Challenge Cup was concluded at Cornwall Park on Saturday, when Hastings, the holders, were successful in staring off a challenge by Albion. Replying to the challengers’ 126 (J. Ball 31, Bireh 23; Tacon took 5 for 18) Hastings made 136 (Gulbransen 49, Fitzgerald 35, Watkins 24; Birch took 6 for 33). In the second visit Albion could make only 49 (R. Ball 15; Yarwood took 3 for 2, Lacon 2 for 13 and Love 2 for 19), the smart fielding of Hastings collecting three wickets per medium of run-out. The holders lost two wickets (Gulbransen 21 not out, Fitzgerald 16) for 42 runs, giving themselves a four-point victory by eight wickets. Next Saturday Hastings will be called upon to defend the cup against a challenge by Hastings Old Boys.
