SUPREME COURT

WANGANUI SESSIONS.

Wanganui, November 12. The Supreme Court opened its session to-day with no criminal business on tho calendar. This is the second occasion this year on which the judge has received a pair of white gloves in Wanganui. Mr Justice McGregor remarked; “1 am sure that it must bo a source of gratification that the wide and populous district of Wanganui should be so free from crime. The same thing happened here nine months ago, which makes it all the mote remarkable. It seems to be a double event, over which the district should be very proud.” INVERCARGILL SITTINGS. Invercargill, November 12. The Supreme Court opened before Mr Justice Kennedy. The criminal calendar is heavy. Referring to the six charges of false pretences against James Neilson Johnston in connection with Quarterly Dividends Ltd. and National House Purchase Ltd., His Honour pointed out that the mere fact that Johnston was an agent would not excuse him. The false representations alleged were that by paying £1 to one concern and £1 to another, and by paying £l5 in monthly instalments, a subscriber would fee able to draw £5OOO in seven and a-haJf years. He failed to sec how a concern doing no trading but merely juggling with money could produce such results. On th evidence the Grand Jury should have no difficulty in finding a true bill.
