PROPOSED FRUIT POOL

VOTING ARRANGEMENTS WELL IN HAND. RESULT SHOULD BE KNOWN NEXT WEEK. The Adivsory Board of the Hawke’s Bay Fruitgrowers’ Federation met in Hastings last evening, when the members discussed various important matters with Messrs J. L. Brown and H. Napier, chairman and secretary respectively of the New Zealand Fruit Control Board. Business related principally to the proposed provincial pool, and the local arrangements for export generally. Speaking to a “Tribune” representative this morning, Mr A. L. Baumgart, the local agent of the Federation, said that the season promises to be a very big one for exporters. This being the case, then it was advisable to have all arrangements well in hand. This is very necessary, for in the event of the pool being adopted a great deal of extra work, in the way of labelling and general handling ling of the fruit will be thrown on the local organisations. The local federation is arranging for the distribution of voting papers on the question of establishng a provincial pool to all exporters wno have sent away 100 cases or more during the past three seasons. Mr Baumgart expects to send the papers out tomorrow, and it is anticipated that the result of the poll will be known early next week. Personally, Mr Baumgart thought there would be very little, if any, opposition to the scheme. Should there be a majority of 75 per cent, in favour, then he felt sure there would lie no difficulty in gaining the sanction of the Control Board. The interviewer was informed that in the event of the poll being carried, the local Advisory Board would have the task of making the allotments towards various f.o.b. sales which the Control Board had made from time to time. The local organisation also, would have to determine the proportion of the various varieties and sizes which should be sent to the different markets. “It is well,” he said, “that growers should recognise that this is essential if the pool is to be carried out effectively Personally, I think the pool will be a good move for the local growers.”
