The Dunedin City Council decided to take a poll of ratepayers on a proposal to raise a loan of £44,000 for a new fourteen-inch main to supply water to the high levels.—(Press Association.) Advice has been received from Mi. W. E. Barnard, M.P., that the Minis ter of Education has approved a substantial grant for the erection of the first portion of the new Napier Technical College. A fine of £lO was inflicted by Mr. A. M. Mowlem S.M. at the Hastings Magistrate’s Court yesterday afternoon on Eraia Timu, who was charged with obstructing the Acclimatisation Society Ranger in the execution of his duty, near I’oukawa lake, on Juno 2. Timu was also charged with killing a pukoko during a close season, but this charge was withdrawn. The costs amounted to £2 6s. Yesterday the secretary of tho H.B. Radio Society received a further batch of letters of appreciation of tho recent broadcast concert and donations to the Napier Hospital radio fund. Tho letters received now total 31. as well ns seven telegrams. The recent letters are from Mrs Vienry and S Johnstone Ward, Marlborough, “A.G.C..” Stratford, M. Knight, Levin, and “Self-Denial,” Napier.

The Manuka sailed from Sydney this morning for New Zealand ports. A final reminder is given of the bachelors’ ball to be held in the Sherenden Hall to-night. A Chequer ’bus will leave Roachs’ at 7.15. In respect to 16,391 claims the sum of £49,127 was refunded from duty □n motor spirits consumed during the year which ended on December 31 last. The annual general meeting of the Heretaunga Co-operativo Dairy Co., Ltd 1 , will be held in the Hastings Assembly Hall on Saturday next, at 12.30 p.m. Mr. C. E. Dowland, Deputy Commissioner of Taxes, will deliver an address on “Laud and Income Tax” to-morrow (Friday) evening at 8 o’clock, in the Napier Borough Council Chambers. Sixty per cent, of the total number of missing postal packets during the year ended March 31 last were traced, according to the annual report of the Post, and Telegraph Department. There were 6276 inquiries for missing packets, and as tho result ef investigation 3728 were traced or satisfactorily accounted for. Residents throughout Hawke’s Bayare reminded that Napier Shopping Week will be from Monday, September 2nd, to Saturday, September 7th. Napier shops will be at their gayest, and there will be plenty of inducement to test Napier values. In addition there will bo a variety of attractions which will help to make the week one of great interest. Tho Latham street end will provide for more standing room. Covered stand reserved seats are still available at the booking offices. The Hastings Citizens’ Band held a very enjoyable dance in the band room on Tuesday night, when a very pleasant evening was spent in dancing to the music supplied by Mr. L. Henry, Mr. C. McCoombe acting as M.C. The waltzing competition was won by Mrs Speers and Mr. Radford, and the Monto Carlo dance by Mrs Simpson and Mr. Marquand. Mrs Speers and Mr. Devine played extras at the supper interval. The ladies’ committee, who were in charge of the arrangements, including a delectable supper, may be congratulated on the success of tho reunion. Ruling that a cash docket was a receipt and must be stamped if the amount was over £2, Mr Wilson, S.M., to-day at Hamilton fined the locaf manager of the Farmers’ Trading Company £1 for failing to stamp such ii. docket for cash sales totalling £4. Counsel for the deteuce claimed that the docket was issued simply i as a guide to the delivery man, indicating that the goods were paid tor. The Magistrate said he must conclude that the docket constituted a receipt, as the amount of sale and the name oi the vendor appeared lor the customer’s information.—Press Association. The penny section experiment being carried out on the Napier municipal tramway service has not so far turned out a financial success. From the returns supplied by the tramway manager, Mr. J. Dick, the revenue from the service for the first six days’ operation of the scheme suffered to the extent of £5B 3/9. The number of passengers carried, compared! with the same week in last year, showed an increase of nearly 3,009. This increase, however, is not. sufficient to make up for tho lower charge and unless increased patronage is given to tho service the exlierinient is not likely to be carried on beyond the three tnonths decided on. The Hastings Labour Party's weekly card party and dance was held in the Trades’ Hall last evening, over 20 tables were occupied by the card players. The following took honours in the euchre tournament:—Ladies. Mrs Hogan Ist, Mesdames W. Taylor Corcoran and Smith tied for 2nd and Mesdames Campbell, Mark and McLeod tied for the lucky number; gentlemen: Mr. Searl and Mr. F. Taylor tied for first, and Mr. J. Fritchley was third; Mr. McMahon captured the lucky number. The cards division was under the supervision of Mr. A. Jones. For the dance, Mrs Horne supplied the music, and Mr. J. Queenan discharged the duties of M.C. Tho usual quarterly meeting of tho Eureka Lodge of Druids was held in the Methodist Hall, Hastings, on Tuesday, when a good number of members were present. Tho candidates who were proposed at last meeting were initiated into the rites of Druidism, P.D.P. Bro. H. C. Tucker acting as M.C. The delegate to tho Hospital Council reported that they had turned down tho increase of levy. The juvenile superintendent, reported on the progress of tho Lodge, and urged tho adult members to make visits. Ladies’ night will be held on 9th September, and tho brothers are requested to be punctual at 7.30 p.m. to expedite Lodge business. The R.A.C. will pay a visit to Waipawa on Wednesday, September 10th, and members arc asked to advise the secretary of how many can go so as to arrange transport. Sick pay amounting to £29 4/- was passed.
