THE HAWKE CUP HAWKE'S BAY ATTITUDE CONDEMNED. TROUBLE OVER SECOND CHALLENGE. [Per Press Association.] Palmerston North. March 26. At the meeting of the Manawatu Cricket Association the attitude adopted by Hawke’s Bay as a result of Manawatu’s expressed inability to meet them in a second challenge match for the Hawke Cup was severely condemned. The chairman. Mr. W. J. Miller, commented that there was little prospect of Hawke's Bay’s demand that Manawatu forfeit the cup as a result of their not playing the match being entertained owing to the fact that Rule 5 of the laws governing the Hawke Cup competition gives the holders the right to refuse* any challenge after February 28. ■ Manawatu, however, never received any notification from Hawke's Bay of their intention to lodge a second challenge, the first intimation having been received late on Monday, the 18th inst., to the effect that Hawke's Bay expected to oppose the holders on the Wednesday.

“Unofficially, I nright say,” added the speaker, “I heard all sorts of rumours from other associations relative to Hawke's Bay’s intentions of lodging a second challenge, while one letter from the New Zealand Council mentioned the possibility. To put it mildly, the holders were at least entitled to due notification. “RelAtive to the tone of the letter from Mr. E. H. Williams to the New Zealand Council, I am of opinion that this association will take strong exception to it.” It was decided that the New Zealand Council be invited to furnish a copy of the letter from Hawke’s Bay applying for a second match and setting out the reason for such right to challenge; fui ther that the Couneil’s attention be drawn to the fact that Hawke's Bay had not had the courtesy to notify the holders of their intention to challenge; also that the Manawatu association took strong exception to the tone of the letter forwarded to the Council by Mr. Williams, the president of the Hawke’s Bay association.
