FIRES
HOMESTEAD DESTROYED. [Per Press Association.) Wairoa, Jan. 23. Fire at midnight totally destroyed the Whitehead homestead, in the Mahia road, Morere, only the piano being saved. The insurances are unavailable. BLAZE IN NAPIER. Shortly after 10 o’clock this morning the Napier Fire Brigade was summoned to an outbreak'of rfie in Mr. M. Spriggs’, furniture dealer, shop in Shakespeare road. The outbreak, which was confined to a small shed at the rear of the main building, was quickly got under control by the brigade. As this building contained largo quantities of flax for upholstery purposes the volume of smoko w-as exceptionally dense, giving the impression that the fire was an extensive one. The building was badly charred, while a number of the top boards on a stack of dry timber used for cabinetmaking were burned. The promptness of the brigade no doubt saved Napier from a serious conflagration.
