BRITISH PREMIER’S STATEMENT THOROUGH EXAMINATION OF THE QUESTION ANNOUNCEMENT RECEIVED WITH ENTHUSIASM [Australian and N.Z, Pr 6»» Association.) (Received 23, 1.15 p.m.) Londen, Jan.' 22. The Rt. Hon, Stanley Baldwin, in a statement in the House of Commons, intimated that the Government intended to make a thorough examination of the Channel tunne, question from all points of view, including the economic aspect and he asked for the co-operation of the Liberal and Labour parties. Mr. Baldwin’s statement is generally welcomed in all political quarters, The project will be discussed by the Tunnel Parliamentary Commitee on Wednesday. Sir W. Bull, M.P.. chairman ol the tunnel committee, says that be is well satisfied with the position. He could not have expected Mr. Baldwin to get further as he has raised the question out of party politics. “We shall now get to the bottom of the matter. No doubt money will be found immediately. France and Italy are willing to put tin tl> > r amount but they agree that England must have financial control. Baldwin’s statement meets with unqualified approval. “L’lntransigeant” features the announcement and says that in the event ef the tunnel being constructed Britain will be the terminus of the great international and European railways. Tens of thousands of French business men and tourists will visit Engine for the first time, the vnlue of wb'cb is obvious. Furthermore, the day that the tunnel is voted the cause of peace will have considerably progressed.
