VATICAN AND ITALY
EFFORT TO NULLIFY RECONCILIATION. FREEMASON’S VIGOROUS CAMPAIGN. [United Press Association—By Cable— Copyright.] I Australian and N.Z. Press Association.] London, Jan. 21. The “Morning Post’s” Rome correspondent states that there is reason to believe that a vigorous campaign is being initiated by Continental Freemasonry to nullify the reconciliation between the Pope and the Indian State, as the Vatican is regarded as the implacable foe of Freemasonry. This is the reason for the secrecy of the preliminary negotiations, which Signor Mussolini initiated. Another question that has arisen is the relationship between the Holy See and the League of Nations in the event of the Vatican’s return to a temporal power. Hitherto the Vatican has been represented at Geneva by the Papal Nuncio nt Berne. When the Church enters the comity of nations, however, its ambassadors will have standing with international potentialities. It must, be remembered, however, that negotiations are only in the embryo state. A full statement or a prelfininrr settlement cannot bo reached lo months to come.
