GENERAL NOTES.

Red Heckle is being treated to a lapse of easy work, and will not be raced again until the autumn meetings commence. If all goes well with him he will contest both the New Zealand and Great Northern St. Leger Stakes to be decided at the Wellington and Auckland autumn meetings respectively. Reports are appearing in several parts to the effect that Martarma is the only horse left to carry on the Martian line. This is incorrect, says “The Watcher.” Warplane is a notable Martian horse whose stock have been doing very well lately, one of his sons, Red Heckle, winning the Great Northern Derby. Raceful is another Martian horse whose services are available in the north.

Glena Bay, the Romeo—Martigues gelding in M. J. Carroll’s team, who ran disappointingly in his two starts at Awapuno at Christmas time, is working steadily at To Rapa in view of Takapuna engagements. Glena Bay was a winner in Highweight company on the North Shore track at the Spring meeting. 1

Twelve months back Ti Tree won the Zealandia Handicap at Takapuna with 8.0. For the race of this title on Saturday next the Tea Tray— Tainiai mare has been weighted at 7.7. Although her racing condition has to be taken on tn:st > i Tree will.

nevertheless, come in for good support it she goes to the post in the seven furlong event at the Shore.

Te Atiawa and Miss Mercia are doing useful work at New Plymouth. They will sport silk at Egmont and Taranaki, and possibly also at Wanganui and Opunake. Their owner, Mrs. W. I). Graham, leaves for England in March, and during her absence her horses will be spelled.

Desert Glow is reported to be in good order at Te Awamutu in view of his Takapuna engagements. The Day Comet —Lady Winsome .gelding has shown winning form this season and some further results from the same direction are not unlooked for.

The Fifteenth Taranaki Stakes field promises to be the best that has ever contested the classic, not forgetting the duel between Desert Gold and Gloaming. Paganelli. Gascony, The Hawk, Silvermine, Reremoana, Cimabue, Bright Glow, Te Atiawa, Ridgemount, Lady Quex and good two-year-olds in Clever and Eaglet are among those who make up a really classic field.

The Te Awamutu owner-trainer, F. E. Loomb, has two colts by the Eng-lish-bred Illumination, one from Erinagh and the other from Lady Biddy. They are reported to be thriving nicely. • • •

The Thespian two-year-old colt recently purchased by Mr. W. Graham is a beautifully built customer and on looks should be good enough for the best of company (states “iWuturoa” in the Taranaki “Daily News”). A sturdily-built chestnut, he closely resembles his brilliant sire, who accounted for Gloaming in the King’s Plate, at Ellerslie, when the mile record was established for New Zealand. The youngster has not long been brought in, but is easy to handle, and his early education in Trainer J. O'Neill’s capable hands shortly begins.

Mr. Robert Millen, of Epsom, a well-known veteran of the trotting sport, is in a private hospital at Auckland. Mr. Millen, it is stated, had eaten some ham, and ptomaine poisoning followed.

The latest addition to A. Tinker’s team at Te Rapa is Kaha. The latter is a three-year-old gelding by Limond from Noreen who was recently purchased by Mr Clive Matthews, of Hamilton who has the hurdler, Gala Day, in t"he same stable. As Kaha is a half brother to Gaillard he has some claims to galloping ability.

Transformer’s Wellington Cup engagement <vas not kept, as it was considered that the prospects for the Thurnham gelding at Takapuna would be more attractive. Transformer has been achieving nothing outstanding on the tracks at Te Papa, hut he has been working nicely and should go well on top of the ground at the Shore fixture.

The connections of Wenday have decided to race the Day Comet mare in the Cup in preference to the Highweight Handicap on the first day at Takapna. Wenday has never been in the racing trim her trainer, A. P. Brady, has her at present, and she must be given a chance in Saturday’s race. To bo in the money each time in twelve starts this season, which is Wenday’s record, speaks for itself.
