RAILWAY TANKS AND FENCES
EFFORT TO HAVE THEM REMOVED. THE MAYOR'S ENDEAVOURS. At last night’s meeting of the Hastings Chamber of Commerce the Mayor (Mr. 0. A Maddison) told the members that he was making another endeavour to have the unsightly railway tanka in Russell street removed and the stands taken away. To secure this the council had offered to put in a fire plug from which the engines could ba watered and for which no vharge would be made for the supply. There were onlv a few engines to b<* watered and the cost would not be much—only £2 or £3 a year. He had also spproached the Department, asking them to remove the present posts and rails fencing the railway platform garden plots from the Queen street entrance to near the railway statinn. so that the view of the plots would be thrown open to the public. These matters are under consideration.
