Wellington Cup Meeting

Opens To-morrow at Trentham

Review of the Fields The Wellington Cup meeting will open to-morrow and will be continued on Thursday and Saturday. With such fine fields engaged to-morrow the club should eclipse all records. Hawke’s Bay stables are represented in each of the eight races on the first day, and on the form shown before leaving they should be in the limelight.

Operations commence with the

Trentham Highweight, 1 mile.

Beaumont has won most of his races when the sting has been out of the ground, so perhaps the going tomorrow will not suit’him. Thurnbell,

although not much to look at, is very useful under the present conditions. Royal Lineage has been most disappointing so far this season, but may make amends at Wellington. Pale Star left here in excellent condition and should run a good race. Arrowy, to my mind, is the pick of the handicap. Bonhomme is worth a second glance. Mister Gamp is fair, while Airtight, if in the same condition as twelve months back, should again he in the money. Bright Day appears to be coming back to form. Toawai and Star Raid, of the ligM weights, may be the pick. Arrowy, I’ale Star and Bonhomme may be the favourites on the machine. Next on the programme is the classic Wellington Stakes, o furlongs. Admiral Drake Gay Ballerina Aspiring Goblin Market Ceremony Honour Childsplay My Own Clever Royal Queen Daiston Speed Light First Money Winlock Francolin

Only two threc-year olds are engaged, the balance, naturally being two-year-olds. Childsplay, before leaving South, was responsible for some very fast gallops on the Rlccarton tracks. Goblin Market, on C.J.C. Spring form, would be heard among the elect, but the stable is most likely to start Honour, and ho is a good 'un to have on your side. Admiral Drake, from here, is a fair colt but not brilliant enough in tins field of “cracks.” Aspiring, too, is a good performer, but not quite up to present company. Ceremony, duo to his great brilliancy, will be better suited by this distance than in the G.N. Foal Stakes and Royal Stakes, when he finished third and second respectively. Lysander’s brother tomorrow will test the best. Clever is another a little out of her depth. First Money and Francolin have each won in handicap events, but their victories were not decisive enough to enhance their chances in such company as the present. My own may start, but the Fitzherbert Handicap should be more in her line at present. Gay Ballerina is a wonderfully improved filly and without fear of contradiction this writer states that never has a two-year-old left this district in better or more forward condition. In her last gallop at Hastings she ran 5 furlongs on the plough comfortably in 1.2 —good enough to win nine times out of ten. To-morrow the class is extra good, but if 58 secs will win then the Lord Quex —Lady Ball filly will be that near that it wiil make no difference. Speedlight was a youngster that in the Spring came quick, but has not improved as much as others. The favourites on the machine may bo Greenwood’s Elect. Child’s Play, Ceremony. Next to be decided is the Apprentices’ Plate, 7 furlongs. Clarendon Phillipic Filosol Pound Note Full Mark Roi de Vai Gold Dawn Royal Black Grand Acre Stanchion High Court Star God High Faintin’ Swoopalong Land Guard Sylvan Dell Llanore Topere Moorgas Wine Tray Paquito

Although this field has dwindled down from 43 to 21 there still remains a fine lot of hacks with recent winners in Filoso'l, Gold Dawn, Grand Acre, High Court, Llanore, Roi de Vai, Stanchion, Star God and Topere. Hawke’s Bay claims four representatives in High Court. Star God. Sylvan Dell and Topere, of which, over this particular distance, Sylvan Dell is the best. The best performed candidates of the field are Bright Glow’s sister. Gold Dawn and Mr. W. E. Bidwill’s Stanchim. Stanchim, Gold Dawn and Sylvan Dell may wind up the best backed of the twenty-ono runners.

Then comes the—

Fitzherbert Handicap, 5 furlongs. First Division.

Among this crowd we have three youngsters—My Own. Best Friend and Hunting Cry. Best Friend as yet is slow on leaving the barrier and but for that fault would be a serious consideration. My Own, prior to departure, was galloping well and if not started in the classic appeals here. Hunting Cry. on condition, requires more time. Valpre, My Own and Royal Flyer may be the best hacked of this division. Second Division. Cuticle 8 5 Royal Tobacco Parade 7 3

Cuticle, in her last gallop before leaving Greenmeadows. defeated Speed Light by a length over half a mile in 48 seconds—a strong recommendation. Tea Queen is a smart filly as Ellerslie form shows. Glenartney has a Wanganui reputation. Gay Virginia did not make the trip. Perhaps the best hacktd of this division may be Cuticle, Tea Queen and Tobacco Land. Interest will now centre in the— Wellington Cup, 1} mile.

Rapine may not be up long enough to compete against a strong field of seasoned horses over twelve furlongs. At Hastings when he raced he i>u’il< ' up exceptionally well and even when in his prime could have done no better over the particular distance, 6J furlongs. Since, he has gone on the right way, so well in fact that in to-morrow’s race he is going to hav e a say in the decision of ’ the Cup. Oratrix certainly has won a New Zealand Cup, but outside that and her second at Randwick in the Metropolitan .she has 'nothing to make her the good thing many proclaim. Vertigern is a good horse and far better performed than Oratrix on the same mark. Hoylake is certainly in the boom and has been for some time. Set Sail, when younger, proved unable to compete successfully over 12 furlongs with the best,' so is not likely te improve now. Pink Note is undoubtedly a

Vertigern The Hawk Hoylake Rapine Now comes the Anniversary Handicap, 1 mile.

handicap performer above the average, but among the best he feels the pinch at the end of a fast run 1) miles. Star Area must enter into calculations, but too much reliance cannot be placed on his Awapuni form. Joy Bird is nicely in ami has won over this distance before. Good Performer as-she is this class might be just a wee bit too good. Battle Colours has come down in the weights since his last trip to Trentham. At the weight he cannot be overworked. The Hawk (7.8) with H. Goldfinch in the saddle, is a proposition that bears the most minute inspection. Never has he been trained until of late for a mile and a half, but has beat the best at w.f.a. over miles in Australia. His preparation here has been closely followed and when Mr. Cameron’s old champion departed one was forced to the conclusion that his work left nothing to be desired. In his final gallop he run once round on the plough in 1.37 4-5, which is sufficient to make a horse favourite. Catkin, unless going is heavy, does not appeal. Historic is a big awkward gelding and may not be able to get sufficient room to operate in this big field, but may run well neverthe less. Concentrate is a fastly improving colt but whether enough for this class is hard to say. Talisker is only a moderate. He will be coupled with Vertigern. Beau Geste cannot be left out. White Fang may find the distance too far. Yoma may he worth support. Royal Saxon is greatly favoured by his party, but the distance may find him out. Papatu. Blush and the others of the 7st. division, on performances, do not appeal. Tire problem is not an easy one, but perhaps the most money will be found forthcoming for ■

Crown Area, on his Jockey Club Handicap form, is not badly treated with 9.13. Panther is useful, but at the weight has been set the hardest task of his life. King Midas is a good miler in welter class. So far this season Ruanui has failed to show up at all. Toxeuma. on form, is most difficult to get away from. Anolo is booked for Ashhurst. Tcheka comes into the summing up, as does Kilmoyler; that is if South Island form is any guide. The remainder do not .appeal greatly on recent achievements. Toxeuma, Crown Area and King Midas may be the favourites. The big sprint will next be decide* Telegraph Handicap, 6 furlongs.

Gascony is reported to have done very well since his win over Reremoana in the Stakes at Awapuni. In that particular race R. Reed, on Gascony, won the race in stealing a march on the older horse when coming into the straight. Silvermine won the Stewards’, and was third in the Auckland Railway. Cimabue, on form, does .not impress. Joy King is hardly brilliant enough for this cron) and would be better suited ove r \ mile. Awarere is smart, but there are one or two smarter. Arroow Lad, honest and consistent, must be considered. Silver Paper is going great •guns and despite Ids failure in the C.J.C. Stewards’ Handicap last November must now. on both public nnd private form, be greatly considered. Nightmarch, in this company, will not be suited by the short distance. Vast Acre is only moderate. Lysander has failed to come back despite the pro-

mise in the spring. Ridgemount is a silent tip from Taranaki. Kaihoro can certainly muster up a lot of pace and good little filly as she undoubtedly is it is asking her a very big question to win in such company albeit she has only 7.3 in the saddle. Consent won the Wanganui Guineas and then went on to Trentham to win the Flying in the spring, but since has done no good so does not invite a deal of confidence until showing some return to hi s spring form. The undermentioned may be the favourites: Silver Paper Reremoana Gascony The concluding event is the Ruapehu Handicap, 6 furlongs..

This is about an open race, as there is on the programme. Bayites engaged are Repay. Millais, Silver Tray, Knightlike, Bernera, King’s Jest and Shrewd. Zippor, who appears on the card, did not make the {rip. Repay left here in great heart and has many friends. Millais will find nine stone odd a big burden. Bernera, not the best at the post, is to be ridden by Goldfinch, so will not lack for anything in the way of horsemanship. Knightlike does not appeal. Shrewd should go close in picking up a race on the trip. Tire favourites may be Repay, Bernera, Lucky Bag and Repay.
