MR. W. BURFIELD A POPULAR BOWLER The Kia Toa bowling green w»s the scene of a pleasant function on Saturday afternoon. when about 100 guests, representative of members of tho howling chibs in Hawke’s Bay, and members of the Kia Toa Croquet Club, were entertained at afternoon tea by Mr. and Mrs. W. Burfield on the «ve of their departure on an extended tour to the Old Country. A dainty and most enjoyable tea was served, including a generous supply of soft drinks and welcome ice cream. In a happy speech the president of the club; Mr. T. A, Williams, referred to the splendid service rendered to the club by Mr. Burfield as green superintendent. He had he said, been most zealous in his duties and they would greatly miss him on the green. On behalf of the members he wished both Mr. and Mrs. Burfield a pleasant trip and a safe return. As a club they looked forward to the occasion of hoisting the flag on the pavilion which their departing jruest had promised to send out from England. (Applause.) As a token of esteem from members of the dub Mr. Williams then handed a handsome rug to Mr. Burfield which he said would prove useful on the voyage, and to Mrs. Burfield he presented a cut glass, silver topped, smelling salts bottle. From the croquet players Mr. Burfield was the recipient of a leather tobacco pouch, bearing his monogram, and Mrs. Garland, in a neat little speech, presented Mrs. Burfield with a box of fancy handkerchiefs. accompanied with the members’ heartiest and best wishes. His Worship the Mayor (Mr. G. A. Maddison) said lie appreciated being present to pay tribute to the fine sporting spirit always exhibited bv Mr. Burfield, who had not only laboured to advance the game of howls in his own club, but throughout the whole district. He wished for Mr. and Mrs. Burfield a most enjoyable tour, and assured them both’ of a hearty welcome back again to Hastings. After the singing of “For They Are Jolly Good Fellows,’’ Mr. Burfield feelingly responded tn the kind sentiments expressed by the various speakers. Ho appreciated, he said, most, highly the presentations made to himself and Mrs. Burfield, and the greatest pleasure on his return would be the renewal of acquaintance with the Kia Tna green and its members. (Applause.) A photo was then taken of the assembled guests which will form a pleasing memento of the happy gathering.
