On enquiry at the Napier Hospital this afternoon, it was ascertained that Sergeant Doggett, of Hastings, wiio has undergone an operation for appendicitis, is making satisfactory piogress and is improving all the time.
The death has occurred at Westport of Mr Martin O’Connor, who worked on the Chesterhope Estate, near Hastings, over thirty years ago. Leaving here he afterwards was employed on the roads by the Waipnwa and Weber County Councils, retiring about six years ago and taking op bis residence at Westport. He was unmarried. Industrious, trustworthy and far-sight-ed, he always enjoyed the confidence of his employers. During hi? lifetime, he accumulated a sum sufficient to enable him to retire into private life a comparatively wealthy man.
Mr Jack Reed, of Wairoa, has been appointed as cadet at the Hastings Magistrate’s Court, vice Mr J. Corbishlcy, transferred to Wairoa.
The G.P.O. announces the following navigation warning received from the postmaster at Kaikourn :—“The n;> tain of the Cygnet reports that a large log. about 60 feet in length, is floating one mile east of the Kaikotirt P?insula, and is dangerous to shipping.”—Press Association.
