FIRST MAORI BISHOP

CONSECRATION OF REV. Bennett.

CEREMONY AT NAPIER CATHEDRAL TO-MORROW

The Rev. F. A. Bennett will be consecrated Bishop of Ao-tea-roa in the Napier Pro-Cathedral on Sundry morning at 10.30 o’clock. The srmon will be preached in English and Maori by Archdeacon H. Williams, and the Rotorua Maori choir will lake part in the service.

The Primate, His Grace Archbishop AveiiH. and all the Hsho**** o the Church in New Zealand will l.e present, together with a represritative gathering of Maoris from all parts of New Zealand.

Arrangements have been made (or the running of a special train on Sunday, which will leave Paki Paki at 9.25 a.m., and stop at all stations. It will leave on the return journey at 1.30 p.m. The new Bishop will preach at Paki Paki on Sunday evening.

In connection with the effort made by the Hawkes’ Bay’ Radio Society to have the Rev. F. A. Bennett’s consecration service broadcasted through the Wellington staiton to-morrow, 'be secretary of the society has received word from the Broadcasting Company regretting that, after tlffi fullest investigation, the broadcast has not been found practicable. The Radio Society, however, has now arranged with the Hector Jones Electrical Company and Rees Radio Service to instal a speech amplifier at the Cathedral. A special microphone has been secured from Wellington, and two loud speakers will be installed outside the Cathedral, "so that those who are unable to gain admission should be able to hear from outside everything that goes on inside. Two preliminary tests of the apparatus have proved satisfactory, and the final try-out will take place at the Cathedral this afternoon.

SPECIAL SERVICE AT tISBORNE.

To mark the great importance of the consecration of the first Maori bishop, a united service of Europeans and Maoris has been arranged to take place in Gisborne on the evening of Sunday Dec. 23. This date is the first at which the new bishon could himself attend and preach. On the morning of that date he will preach at the Maori Church at Manutuke. The church at Gisborne should in the future, possibly as a Cathedral Church, occupy a large nlace in the development of the Anglican Church for the northern part of the diocese.
