“E” SHED ACCOMMODATION

QUESTION OF EXTENSION. MR ROACH DEFERS HIS MOTION. The question of carrying out extensions to E cargo shed at the Breakwater was raised by Mr G. F. Roach at yesterday’s meeting of the Napiei Harbour Board. Mr Roach considered that the extension of E shed was a most import ant matter. Business men were now realising that boats of the size of those entering the Inner Harbour were becoming a thing of the past. In time the produce from the southern ports would be brought in larger vessels than the Kaihika and would have to go to the Breakwater. Mr A. E. Jull (chairman) pointed out that if it was decided to proceed! with increased accommodation at the B shed at the Inner Harbour any extension to the E shed would not be necessary. An extension there would not be the simple thing that it was made out to be. because it was not possible to get the width Mr Roach stated that he was promised a report for this meeting, aud it not being available left him iomuwhat in the air.

Mr Jull explained that there was an excuse for the secretary not supply ing the report because, if the extension at the Inner Harbour was decided upon then there was no need for that at the Breakwater. Mr P. Higgins stated that there were not sufficient berths and proceeded to inform the chairman that ho was not acquainted with the workings of the port. Mr Jull, in resenting Mr Higgins’ remarks said that if there was any man who know more about the working of the harbour than he did he would like to see him. Whenever he brought down a scheme for consideration he did so onlv after having given it mature consideration.

Finally it was agreed that Mr Roach should defer his motion until the next meeting.
