RUGBY FOOTBALL

AUCKLAND ON TOUR SOUTH CANTERBURY GOES DOWN. HOME SIDE DEFENDS WELL. Timaru, August 8. The Auckland touring team defeated South Canterbury to-day by 22 points to 14 in the presence of 3000 spectators. The visitors started off at a great pace, and they gave Lire impiessic that they would run up a big score, but they found the local forwards a much tougher proposition than expected. Auckland had the heavier pack, but they were beaten in the tight and loose. They held the advatage in the line-outs, however, and from these the backs got most of their opportunities. The latter combined well in the first half, but in the second session, when they had the sun behind them, the handling was very patchy. Tire tackling of the home forwards and that of the local full-back was very sound, and this kept the score down. The home team scored early from a penalty, but five minutes later Jeffries scored a good try for the visitors, after a pretty back movement. Play was confined to the forwards for a time, with the home side repeatedly breaking through the loose, but the defence held. L Hook then made a beautiful opening, which let Goodwin over for a pretty try. Butler missed the kick. Several penetrating runs by the Auckland backs made the game interesting, nnd eventually Linton touched down after a rush which several forwards participated in. Jenkin converted. The home forwards then asserted themselves and gave the visitors an anxious time, but the movement lacked finish. Securing in the loose, Halstead sent out to Roper, and then to Priestley, who swerved through the opposition twenty-five to score one of the best tries of the day. Just before half-time Halstead landed a penalty goal for the home side, giving the visitors a twopoint lead at the interval.

A GOOD DEFENCE. Auckland had the advantage of the sun in the second half, but the home side put up a great fight, breaking up rush after rush by the visiting backs, whose handling was not so certain as in the first half. The South Canterbury backs had little or no combination, but there were several fine solo performances. For a period Auckland were obliged to defend. The forwards, gaining the upper hand in the line-outs, gave the backs several opportunities to score, but only one got home, a try being scored by Jenkins. Butler converted. Kahn also scored from a scramble on the line and Jenkins kicked a penalty goal. Just on time Scott scored for the home side. Halstead converting. INTER-ISLAND MATCH. SOUTHERN TEAM ANNOUNCED.
