WAIPAWA.

(Own Correspondent.)

John Burke, a stranger to the town, appeared before Dr. Kendall and Mr W. H. Rathbone, charged with being a rogue and vagabond. He was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within six months, .and ordered to leave the town. Mr Greg Nielson left Waipawa on Monday for Auckland, for Tonga, where he has received an appointment. On the eve of his departure he was met by members of several branches of the town’s activities and presented with numerous gifts as an appreciation of his past services and good qualities, and the best of luck was extended to him in his new home. Greg has been a familiar and popular figure in the district foi many years, and was always to the fore in social work. He did active service at the war as a member of the Patrol branch, and took part m the Zeebruggo raid. Since the heavy frost experienced here on Monday 'morning very cold intermittent showers have been in evidence.

The monthly meeting of the Waipawa Progressive Association was held on Monday evening. A fair amount of business was done. Representations are to be made to the Postal Department for two postal deliveries in the Waipawa Bush district, also a further request to open the Post Office from 7 to 8 each evening. The Waipawa County Council is also to be strongly supported in the request for a new Post Office to adequately fulfil the needs of the increased business of the town and district.. The Agricultural Department is to be asked to allow Dr. Freeman to give an orchard demonstration in the vicinity of an early date, and the enighbouring farmers are to be asked tor their co-operation in this and agricultural lectures generally. Mr Bott asked for the support of the association towards improving the Domain by giving facilities to the school children for games. Mr Pratley again advocated that a right-of-way be acquired leading from the woodwork room to the Domain. The result would be to bring the children to within three chains of five acres of a playing area at little expense. A good deal of discussion arose over a previous notice of motion by Mr Pratley that the association should be altered to a chamber of commerce, which would have the effect of giving it a better status in any representations for improvements to the town and district and to widen its sphere of activities. It was finally decided to hold the matter ovet until next meeting. GOLF. A return match between the Waipawa and Aromoana Golf Clubs was played on the local grounds during the week-end, and the latter club was again successful, this time by 8 to 3. At the close Mr C. Nairn, president of the Aromoana Club, expressed the visitors' appreciation of the manner in which they had been entertained. Mr Txicknrt captain ol the local club, similarly responded.
