GREEK BRIGANDS
CAPTURE POLITICIANS.
RANSOM OF £13,000 DEMANDED. [Time, Cable.! London, Aug. 5. “The Times’ ” Athens correspondent reports that five brigands, taking advantage of a bridge amidst hairpin bends of the Yannina road ambushed a motor care containing tfie Progres sive party’s candidates Milonas, Alelas, and Chassiotis, ex-deputies, also Melas’ secretary, returning from an electioneering tour of adjacent villages. The brigands, despite a police post two miles away, presented rifles and took the victims to tne moountains. They released Chassiootis and the secretary, demanding’ a ransom of £13,000 for the remaining two and warning them that there would be no mercy if the authorities were informed. Apparently the ransom will be paid before the brigands are pursued. M. Venizeloos expressed disgust at the outrage, but contends that brigandage. which he promises to extirpate, is a legacy from the former lax Government.
