ALARMING INCREASE OF DAMAGE INSURANCE COMPANIES UNEASY. HOW TO DEAL WITH INCENDIARISM. IPer Press Association.]. Auckland, Aug. 7. At the annual meeting of the shareholders of the New Zealand Insurance Company, Mr. Horton, the chairman, said that the frequency of fires, with the consequent loss of property, had become a source of definite uneasiness to insurance companies operating in the Dominion. All the companies doing business in New Zealand had faced increased losses. “One possible remedy for the excessive fire waste which is such a reproach to our community might be the holding of an enquiry by ths police into all the circumstances connected with every fire. Such enquiries would not only elicit facts that would from time to time bring the incendiarist to justice, but would act as a deterrent to others. "In any case,” said Mr. Horten, “some solution should be found foi the prevention of the Dominion's rapidly growing bill for damage caused by fire.’’
