LATE TURF
MAUNGA SCRATCHED. According to the “Dominion's” Christchurch correspondent, Maunga will be an absentee from the Grand National Steeplechase field. He appeared to be all right after his fall in the Homeby Steeplechase, but one of his front legs filled badly on Sunday, and his trainer, J. Griffiths, decided to take him back to Hastings. It can now be suggested that the last has been seen of Maunga on a race track for some time at least. Beau Cavalier, who narrowly beat Tarleton in a gallop over a mile at Riccarton on Saturday, will be schooled over the big steeplechase country on Thursday morning. He will be ridden by his Grand National Steeplechase pilot, W. J. Bowden.
