THE MAIZE MARKET
AUSTRALIA HAS SURPLUS FOR FOR EXPORT.
According to a statement issued by the Market Department. Canberra, an average maize crop in Australia is about 8,000.000 bushels, all of which is consumed locally. Imports average about 100,000 bushels annually, but vary according to the season’s yield. The chop estimate for 1928 is S7'?(l tons which is a heavy one, and as there is a carry over from last season an export outlet will have to be found. Queensland has recently disposed of 80 000 bushels to the United Kingdom, but the price obtained for Australian maize abroad, owing to the world’s low parity, will always be less than the cost of production. Export will thus only be of advantage in clearing stocks. The average cost of production maize is about 4/8 a bushel, and the world’s parity price is equivalent to 3s a bushel f.o.b. Australian port. The estimated production this year is as follows.—Queensland. 5.000,000 bushels) New South Wales 4.000.000 bushels; and Victoria. 750,000 bushels.
