HOCKEY

(By

“Corner.”)

Two teams selected from the Hastings men hockey players met at Cornwall Park on Wednesday last. The selector chose these two teams with a view to getting the best possible team away to Wairoa on August 8 to play for the Manurere Shield, and the next best team to play a return match against the Maoris at Porangahau. Although the ground was a bit on the heavy side, the hockey, displayed was of a good standard. The team selected to go to Wairoa is a good one, but it is hard to understand why a player like Grenside was not included. He clearly demonstrated by his play in the first part of the game in which he took part on Wednesday that he is the best scoring forward playing in the competition. The forward line was not nearly as effective when he stood down.

Cameron was in his best form in the trial game, playing excellent hockey throughout. He was a tower of strength to his side, and the goal he scored in the second half of the game from the bully-off was a gem. Stan Russell, who is slightly indisposed. did not turn out for his side, and he was greatlv missed. It is to be hoped that he will be quite well and fit for the trip to Wairoa.

see McNab worked hard, but is .still inclined to hit too hard and not pass to the centre as he should do especially when on the attack and near the circle.

Lynch played a steady game, stopping well with his hands and hitting hard. He was always sure, but inclined to be a bit slow.

Crawford plays well in the cirde, and when shooting for goal put plenty of powder into his shots < * •

Terris, in the half line, played a really good game. I noticed him stop several rushes in good style, hitting nicely and clearing in a capital manner. • • »

French played an honest game and broke up several likely movements by the Yellows, but I think that Neil plays a far better game at full-back, because he has tremendous hitting power.

W, Schroder was in the thick of ill and put plenty of vim into his play. With Grenside as support, W. S. plays a far better game. These two, with the centre-forward, showed good form.

Kessell played on the wing for, 1 think, the first time on Wednesday, and came out with flying coloursOne goal he scored was the result of a fine individual effort, taking tho ball from about half-way'and going right through to score, • * *

Kellett is a good winger and can always be relied upon to play a good game, but he was starved on Wednesday. The halves for some unaccountable reason, played one wing only. These tactics, if employ ed in representative hockey, are doomed to failure.

The team should make better use of the corner hits. More goals could be scored if better methods were used in this branch of the game.
