CHATHAM CUP MATCH UNITED DEFEAT ST. ANDREWS. A GAME FULL OF THRILLS. The Chatham Cup game on Saturday proved to bo one of the brightest Soccer games seen in Hawke’s Bay for many a season. St. Andrews, of Palmerston North, met Hastings United at Cornwall Park and after ‘ great struggle, in which there were many thrills and brilliant displays, United earned the right to meet Petone in the second round of the contest. St. Andrews put up a great fight and led 3-yl at the interval but, after changing round, United made good use of the wind to give them the victory by four goals to three. The going from start to finish was great and the .pace a cracker. The visitors got away at the start and the home goalie was tested in the first few minutes. Booth taking advantage of an opening essayed a long shot which took Chilton by surprise and drew first blood for the Yellows.—United 1, St. Andrews 0. This initial success was not long maintained. The ball travelled fast from end to end, Thackwell putting tn some fine work on the wing for St. Andrews. Corkindale obtained and had Wilson completely beaten with a fine fast drive—l all. VISITORS IN FRONT. The visitors were always dangerous when near goal, Corkindale especially showing up well and Wilson found plenty of work to do, saving some fine shots. D. Penman, receiving a nice pass, got well away but Chilton (St. Andrews’ goalie) saved splendidly. Baek went St. Andrews, but Bell (United) cleared his lines. Clark then came to light but Young robbed him. From a free kick Corkindale again obtained possession but his shot went wide. D. Penman and Clark both tested Chilton but the goalie was sound and safe. St. Andrews got away again and Corkindale put his side ahead with another great shot.—St. Andrews 2—l, St. Andrews invaded the Yellow

half and from a centre kick they battled around the United goal area where Butcher had the misfortune to turn the ball into his own goal. Halftime was called soon afterwards with the score reading St. Andrews 3, United 1. THE STRAIN TELLS. On resuming it was clear that St. Andrews were feeling the strain of a fast gruelling game. United opened up with a shot from D. Penman going wide. A corner kick to the Yellows also proved futile. The Blues then broke away and the United goalie had a very narrow escape but an infringement of the offside rule relieved the pressure. With their opponents tiring, United were gradually gaining the upper hand and making a recovery, a score being imminent at any moment. Chilton was playing a magnificent game in goal and saved his side time after time but D. Penman eventually beat him with a great drive from 20 yards out.—United 2—3. This practically proved the turning point of the game. St. Andrews’ attacks were infrequent but always dangerous, two rare opportunities being unaccountably missed. Once, with Wilson out of his place, an open goal was missed and a second occasion when McClement headed wide with Wilson well beaten. The St. Andrews defence was severely strained by the continuous United attacks and Chilton proved a magnificent goalie. One shot from half way by Bell he just succeeded in turning outside and another fine drive from Conroy also just missed. After saving three hot shots in succession, D. Penman finally beat him and amid great applause evened the scores.—3 all. UNITED LEAD. The excitement was very high and the Yellows were playing like a team inspired. They kept the ball continually in the vicinity of the St. Andrews’ goal. From a throw down handy to goal D. Penman and Clark worked the ball into the goal mouth where, although Chilton did his utmost, Clark netted what proved to be the winning goal.—United 4 3. With ten minutes to go, St, Andrews tried desperately to even matters up again but the final whistle blew with the score unchanged. One of the finest and hardest-fought games played in this district ended in favour of Hastings United by 4 goals to 3. Mr. R. Gallacher controlled the game. RESULTS ELSEWHERE.
