PIE CRUST PROMISES.

(To the Editor)

Sir, —Your correspondent “Ratepaper” has a justifiable grievance in his complaint regarding the Pakowhai road, and the promises that were made on the eve of the last County Council elections to have that, and a portion of the Maraekakaho road, tar-sealed a mile each way. The whole question revolves around the stand the ratepayers made against tho attempt to side-track the Pakowhai and Maraekakaho roads in favour of St. George's road as a main highway. The ratepayers had to be punished in some way for their opposition in upholding the decision of the Main Highways Board. This is the true explanation of why the ratepayers of the Pakowhai and Maraekakaho roads have been left “out in the cold,” and figure the last on the list for consideration. All lias been carried out according to the programme arranged by the County Council, when the chairman announced that very little of the rates would be spent on the Pakowhai road. The ratepayers have time to ponder over various matters which require consideration by next May.—Yours, etc.. RATEPAYER No 2. Hastings, J3.7/2S. HASTINGS—WEST. (To the Editor). Sir,—Tn the allocation of future work to be carried out by the Council they apparently have overlooked the verv bad condition of the footpaths leading to S'.irtiord T.-vlgc. one of the principal jpprcnckes to Hastings.

It appears a strange anomaly that all the side streets off Heretaunga street west have concrete paths, and the main street foot walks are lumpy and broken. Tarred paths are only backyard jobs. Bitumen is reason able in cost and makes the best surface of any for pedestrian traffic. I am, etc.. “A TRAMP.” Hastings, 13/7/28.
