TOWN BOARD MEETING CEMETERY AFFAIRS. RATES FOR YEAR. The monthly meeting of the Havelock North Town Board was held last evening. Present, Messrs J. Phillips (chairman), J. H. Joll, J. D. Heenan, C. McDonald, J. G. Nimon, E. C. Stratton and S. Graham. Prior to the commencement of tho regular business, the chairman, moved a vote of condolence with tho relatives of the late Mr' H. M. Rathbone, of Waipawa, and the relatives of the late Mr F. Liley. These were earned in silence, all standing. Mr M. Morrison, Palmerston North wrote congratulating the Town Board on the great improvement in the Havelock North Cemetery, and enclosing his cheque for £ls.—Mr Mossison is to be thanked for his generous donation to the cemetery—The chairman considered that since Mr Anderson had taken the affairs of the cemetery in hand, it looked ns if the Cemetery would pay its way in future. The Clerk reported that the H.E. County Council had forwarded their subsidy fo the Cemetery Fund. £3O.

A discussion arose over the upkeep of the Cemetery, and while, agreeing that the work being done by the extra men was, excellent it was decided that further work be carried out. Mr 8. Graham moved, and Mr J. H. Joll seconded, that two extra men be employed for a week more. This was carried unanimously.GENERAL MATTERS. Mr H. IV. Climio, the consulting engineer, wrote saying, he bad heard the Town Board anticipated some difficulty .tn operating the.ir pump when the Hastings Borough Council started up their larger capacity pumps. He suggested replacing the existing pump motor with an autosynchronov.s motor, which would tun about five times faster and would cost about £200.— Received. The chairman moved that the board pass n resolution that Sir George Hunter M.P., be asked to have a clause inserted in the Washing-up Bill authorising Town Boards to pay their subscriptions to the Municipal Association out of authorised expenditure, instead of out of unauthorised expenditure. —Carried. Tho Hastings Borough Council wrot J giving notice determining the agreement for water supplv. This agreement will end six months from June 29. The council was prepared to enter into negotiations to supply the Town Board with water under suitable' terms and conditions. Messrs Phillips, J. H. Joll and tho Clerk were appointed a committee to meet a Hastings committee on tho subject. Messrs Carlile, McLean and Wood forwarded a copy of a draft received by them from Messrs Kennedy Lu<k and Morling, of an Act of Parliament which it is sought to obtain with regard to Te Mata Park. The board, may if it should so decide, contribute towards the upkeep, maintenance, etc., of the Park. —It was decided to support tho measure. The Headmaster of Hereworth School having applied for permissioa to take turf from the side of Te Mata road for turfing the cricketpitches in the school (rounds, was informed by the board that the spoT on the side of the road would be required bv .them for filling in the gullies. Further, tho board had passed a resolution prohibiting tho removal of spoil from the roads. The Clerk’s renlv was endorsed.

Tho Electrical Engineer reported having naid a visit to Maraetotara Power House, when he found everything working satisfactory.

WATER COMMITTEE’S REPORT. Thc WBrks Committee (Messrs .1. Graham, J. H. Joll and C. Macdonald, which met on Monday, June 18th recommended the following work:— Simla Avenue at To Mata corner to be rounded off to. make the corner less dangerous to traffic; tho County Council should be asked to have the approaches to the Here Here Bridge filled in at once; left-hand corner form Gilpin to Chambers roads should have a wider curve and tho pipe lino extended a further 12 feet; Templeton road should be widened between Epplctt’s property and Gilpin road the growth on the sides of the road to be chipped back, as the road is now dangerous to pedestrians; the Countv Council should be communicated w-th a view of having the '•erner of Gil pin road, near Sirs C. O. Tanner's property,' widened; metalling shnul I go on as previously, Mr Leicester to put t)>e matter in hand nt once. Cooper Bros, having agreed to supply metal at the some rate »s tormerlv; Miss Lowry’s offer to donate a garden scat is to be accepted with thanks ami placed in a suitable position in tho Rest House. Mr J. H. .Toll, speaking for the Works Committee, said thov also desired a parking place nt the Cemetery, this being essential when there was a large funeral. This could bo done for about £2O. Tho Works Committee’s recommendations were adopted. RATE LEVIES. The Chairman moved that tho following rates be levied:—General rate 224-40 d, water rate Jd, Hospital Board rate 33-40 d. Also a rate of Id in tho £1 to provide interest and sinking fund on No. 1 loan account and 740d for No. 2 loan account; making a total of 5 l-10d in tho £. This is 6-16 d lower than last year.—The motion was carried. It was decided to abolish the opening of (lie office on one evening n month for tho Clerk to roeeivo payment of electric light accounts as only one ratepayer in six months had made .use of tho offer. Tho balance standing tn tho debit of the board’s antecedent liability account at tho Bank nf New Zealand was reported to bo £2Bl 3s 7d. The Public Works Department forwarded. £lO 7s for. work done on tho Te Mata ronrl. General Accounts. — Payments amounting to £285 14s lOd and Ceme'tew aecm-nt payments amounting t.l £3l-17s 8d were passed. At the conclusion -if the ordinaw meeting a special mooting was held .when the lialnneo-slioets for the years 1926-7 and 1927-8 were formally 1 adopted.
