ENGLAND TO INDIA SERVICE

The Air Ministry announces that in substitution of all standing agreements a new agreement with Imperial Airways will cqme into operation on April Ist. and will extend for a period of ten years from that date. It will provide for weekly air service between England and India, combined with the present and possibly further daily services on certain routes in Europe. It is hoped that the Indian service, which is expected to begin in April, will eventually be' operated twice a week. The through service to India will terminate at Karachi, but the Government of India has under consideration proposals for services operating from Karachi. The maximum subsidies in respect of services to be provided will be on a decreasing scale. For each of the first two years the amount will be £335,000, and tor each of the next four years £310.000 will he paid. The amount of subsidy will decrease thereafter yearly, and amounts to £70,000. The maximum amount for each year will be allocated in definite proportions to, firstly, European services: secondly, the England-Egyptian, and thirdly, the Egyptian-Indian section. Westralian Airways has called up £60,000 to order four de Haviland Hercules air-liners for the Perth to Adelaide route. They will be similar machines to those used on the Basra-Cairo route, on which in eighteen months there was only one failure in schedule time, and that owing to a sandstorm. Each machine has three silenced engines, and if two peter out the ’plane would not come down before it had covered 30 miles. Their maximum speed is 130 miles, and their cruising speed is 110 miles an hour.
