CHAMBER OF COMMERCE GENERAL BUSINESS. The usual monthly meeting of the Waipukurau Chamber of Commerce was held on Monday night, Mr E. A. Goodger (president), presiding over a fairly large attendance of members. On behalf of the Chamber the president cordially welcomed the new railway stationmaster (Mr-P. A. Munro) to the meeting and incidentally paid a tribute to the local staff. The Associated Chambers of Commerce of New Zealand invited the Chamber’s support of the observance of Empire Shopping Week, inaugurated by the British Women’s Patrio tic League six years ago. the purpose is to promote reciprocal trade between the components of the Empire.—The president and Messrs Given, Hawke, Mathieson and Bryee were appointed as a sub-committee to confer with retailers on this question. The Ashburton Chamber brought before the local Chamber the matter of instituting an intermediate grade for potatoes between seed and F.A.C. table potatoes, with a view to enabling housewives to purchase requirements at lower cost. The suggestion was made that matter be brought before grain merchants’ associations.— Mr Hall explained that only questions of shape in the grading and size were involved, and he moved that the overture be supported. The motion was seconded by Mr Warren and carried. The Hikurangi Chamber of Commerce wrote asking that tho Waipukurau body co-operate in having a Hawkers Act placed on the Statute Book providing that all persons wishing to hawk goods should be registered and pay a reasonable license fee, and further that no goods or foodstuffs be exempted. On the president’s motion, seconded by Mr Holms, it was resolved that the council is of the opinion that non-resident hawkers should pay a reasonable fee.’ GENERAL. The president reviewed various activities that had engaged the attention of the Chamber of late, and was heartily thanked for his attention to several important questions. Mr Dowrick referred to the need for action as to arranging W.E.A. lectures in Waipukurau, as elsewhere, and on his motion a sub-committee was appointed to interview the School Committee viz., the president, secretary, Messrs Holms and the mover. On the president’s motion appreciation wns expressed as to cnc Post and Telegraph Department’s action in taking adequate stops to meet the eVergrowing demands of Waipukurau by extensive additions and alterations to tho post office building. Mr Dowrick seconded tho motion, which was carried unanimously. Mr A. C. Holms delivered an address on Imperial Preference and Reciprocity. GENERAL,NEWS AND NOTES. The sfnall shop gutted by fire on Sunday on Suday, owned by Mrs E. M. Sell, of Auckland, -was covered by an insurance policy of £6O in the United Offiee, and the tools, etc., of Mr Doherty in the Alliance Office for £lOO. Waipukurau is to bo invaded on Monday, June 4th by 200 lady hockey players, and at least 50 men players The Hawke’s Bay Hockey Association hag placed the running of this year's tournament in the hands of Mr G. E. Fowler, and from tire entries already received, the attendace of players will be very large. Tlie senior ladder competition for the Ross Shield is always well worth seeing, and the holders’ team is defendng its title. Three grounds are beng laid out on Russell Park specally for the occasion. Hot water is being provided and arrangements for delaying the night train to Napier have been made, in order to allow ample time for the finals to be played. Indications point tb a big crowd being present at Russell Park ob King's Birthday. Bhe small shop gutted by fire on Sunday, owned by Mrs E. ing its title. Three grounds are The Diamonds (hockey) journeyed to Wainui on Saturday, being defeated by a goal—netted by Mrs Chapman. G. Kuru and T. Pongi were the referees. Weber journeyed to Poranngahau on Saturday, where they were defeatd by Pootirikore by 3 to nil —W. Barlow (2) and B. Kuru. H. Kani ahd T. Kuru were the referees. RUGBY RESULTS.
