WAIPUKURAU.

For the second time during the week the Waipukurau Fire Brigade was summoned to a fire, when on Saturday night at 10.40 o’clock a call was sounded on the electric siren. Many people had just reached their homes after attending the pictures; therefore there was a large crowd of spectators at the scene of the conflagration—the boot shop of Mr. T. Dougherty in Northumberland street. The brigade was very Quickly in action and within a few minutes suppressed the flames which at the moment of the firemen’s arrival were threatening the safety of the large furniture establishment of Messrs R. Staines and Son. A brick dividing wall had held the progress of the outbreak in check. The two-roomed premises occupied by Mr Doherty were partially gutted and the greater part of the contents, other than repairing plant, was destroyed. It appears that the occupier (who sleeps in the back room of the shop) left a kerosene lamp burning during a few minutes’ absence, and he conjectures that it must have by some means capsized, RIFLE CLUB.
