Pearl Cressy,- a married woman, was .charged in Caulfield Court with’stealing bank notes valued at £22,000, the property of her mother, Mrs. Gertrude Palmer, who gave evidence reluctantly, and somewhat incoherently. She said her daughter advised her to convert Government bonds, valued at £23,000, into cash and re-invest it in mortgages at eight per cent., which she said was a better proposition, and te this she (the mother) acquiesced. The cash was brought home and hidden in a sofa and a gas stove, The following morning her daughter (Mrs. Cressy) rose much earlier than usual, and. rushed into her mother’s room and exclaimed: “The money has been stolen.” The daughter thereafter was opulent. She bought a car, dressed expensively, and offered to take her mother on a trip to England. The case was dismissed.
