The fighting on the PekinHankow railway has assumed serious proportions. During the four days’ engagement the Northerners encountered the first Kuominchln army, and winning ground In every encounter, they are now nearing Cheng-ting. The capture of Suu-yuan is reported due to the Southerners’ withdrawal from HerlungKiaiig. Cavalry is now passing through lien-tsm for the purpose of dealing with raiders along the centre of the line between the two railways, while the reorganised Shantung armies are moving southwards irom Tsangchow through the empty territries lately abandoned by the Southerners. The general impression of the situation seems to be that the Northerners are concentrating for a swift campaign against Feng Yuh-siang in the hope of effecting the complete elimination of his army. Eight hundred Japanese troops, the vanguard of the Nogoya division, have arrived at Tien-tsin. Three thousand more Japanese troops arrive .to-morrow.
