There is no material change in Sir Charles Skerrett’s condition.

There passed away in the Waipukurau Hospital on Thursday Mr Arthur James Fould, of Omakere. The deceased gentleman was only 38 years of age.

The German Geographical Society has bestowed a gold medal on Sir Douglas Mawson in recognition of his explorations in the Antarctic, on which he had just lectured at the society’s centenary celebrations.

The many friends of Mr and Mrs G. McKay will learn with pleasure that their little girl, who recently met with a severe accident to one of her eyes, is now almost recovered. The sight of the eye has been preserved.

Mr A. H. Messanger, Government Publicity Officer, accompanied by Mrs Messenger, left by the Maunganui for for Sydney yesterday. Mr Messenger intends to visit the main cities of Australia with a view to organising a publicity campaign in the country, and will be away for about four months.

A well known and highly respected citizen of Wanganui, in the person of Mr W. Fleming, sheepfarmer, passed away on Friday at Hamilton, where the deceased and his wife had goifc on a business visit. Ho leaves a widow and grown-up family of six sons and two daughters. Mr Fleming had two brothers, Robert and Richard Fleming, both of Gisborne; sisters Mrs J. Callaghan, of Stratford, and Mrs G. Appleby, of Hastings.

Owing to the timebr having been cut out at the Pawokhai sawmill, Mr W. L. Rutherford, who has been manager for the past nine years, terminated his engagement there last Tuesday, when the employers of the mill presented him with a silver mounted pipe, bearing his initials. Mr G. Brown, on behalf of the men, made the presentation, saying that it was a mark of their ‘appreciation of his comradeship and goodwill towards them durng his mauagement of the mill.

The Waipukurau County Office was the scene of a very happy gathering on Thursday afternoon when the members of the outside staff of the council met to show their appreciation of the many kind services directed towards them in the past by Mr J. W-. Elliott, and as a small token of the esteem in w’hich he was held Mr Elliott was presented dith a gold mounted fountain pen and pencil. Mr Elliott said he always had a “soft spot” for the men outside. For the 21 years he had been with the council it had always been his policy to lend a hand whereever and whenever possible.
